Horse Facts

The Strength of Equines

Horses are prey animals and survive and thrive by keeping a wide view and staying aware of the big picture. They have a flight or fight response and are always aware of their surroundings, as well as potential threats. Because they are preyed upon in nature, they must have a highly developed ability to sense changes in the environment and in the stance and arousal level of other herd members. This gives the horse an incredible capacity to respond to the slightest signal, change in behavior or emotion in humans.

Horses are Social Animals

Depending on interaction and cooperation within their herd. Watching how they interact and communicate with one another can teach us a great deal about nonverbal communication, social interaction and living in the moment. Learning how to communicate with horses offers an opportunity to develop metaphors and analogies that can be applied to life challenges and skills.

Horses are non-judgmental

But they do have a memory that rivals the elephant. So, they won’t judge you unless they’ve been harmed or mistreated by you. If that has happened, the likelihood that you can gain their compliance without the use of force or coercion is doubtful.

Horses are imposing in their size

And therefore focus our attention. They may offer the opportunity to overcome fear and develop self confidence.  Their size and quickness to respond requires the need for us to focus, as well as develop an awareness of the moment in order to stay safe and feel secure.  This attentiveness helps to cultivate skills in improving responses to the changing circumstances of life and empower one to try new things.

Horses provide us a reflection of what we are feeling

If we are angry, sad, or emotionally struggling, their response to you will mirror those feelings. They may walk away, they may refuse to engage, or they may sense that you need help, and actually try to give you support by nuzzling, or just standing next to you. There is scientific evidence that proves that the energy field of a horse extends out almost 8 feet. That energy field can affect heart rate, blood pressure, and general well-being. Just being near or around horses can be a cathartic experience. But to benefit from that energy field, one must be open to the experience of it.

Horses allow us to see ourselves through their eyes

They provide an authentic reflection of what we tell them with our bodies and our minds.  When we feel safe in their presence, and they feel safe in ours, our equine partners will inspire us to live in harmony, authenticity and congruity. This healing capacity of the horse is truly powerful and remarkable.
